TIERRA CRAFT
The name combines tierra, meaning earth, and craft, the act of making by hand.
It reflects an approach rooted in natural materials, craftsmanship, and thoughtful design.
Through wood, stone, metal, and earth, we create spaces and objects that belong to their place.

Principles of Tierra Craft
Where natural materials, skilled hands, and thoughtful design come together.

Materials
Wood, stone, metal, and earth each carry their own texture, strength, and history. Rather than hiding these qualities, we work with them, allowing materials to age naturally and reveal their character over time.

Craft
Craftsmanship is more than technique—it is patience, discipline, and attention to detail. Every joint, surface, and proportion is carefully considered so that each piece feels solid, honest, and built to last.

Design
Good design should feel natural to use and comfortable to live with. By carefully considering proportions, materials, and everyday use, we create spaces and objects that are both practical and quietly beautiful.
About the founder
My name is Dong Ju Kang. I'm a carpenter and designer working in Hida Takayama, building houses, furniture, and spaces from natural materials. Tierra Craft exists because I wanted to create work where design and making are not separate—where the person who conceives the idea is also the person who builds it.
- Interest in self-sufficient living and vernacular architecture sparked the beginning.
- Traveled across Korea visiting small workshops and learning from carpenters who still worked with their hands.
Founder Timeline
2011
Searching for a Self-Sufficient Life
Began thinking seriously about how to live a more self-sufficient and meaningful life. This curiosity gradually led to an interest in how people build their homes, use natural materials, and live closer to the land.
2012
Searching for Craft
Traveled around Korea visiting carpenters and traditional builders. During this time, I began to understand the value of craftsmanship and the importance of learning directly from people who work with their hands.
2017–2019
Studying Wooden Architecture
Moved to Japan to study timber frame architecture at Chuokougakou in Tokyo. There I learned the fundamentals of wooden construction, traditional joinery, and the discipline required to build structures that last for generations.
2019–2022
Oak Village
Worked at Oak Village in Hida Takayama, a company known for its craftsmanship and furniture making. During this period, I deepened my understanding of woodworking, furniture design, and the relationship between material, form, and function.
2024
Founding Tierra Craft
Started Tierra Craft, an atelier focused on designing and building spaces and objects using natural materials such as wood, stone, metal, and earth. The goal is to bring together thoughtful design and craftsmanship to create places and objects that feel natural and lasting.
